RALEIGH – The third and final Civitas Poll tracking the North Carolina Democratic presidential primary shows former Vice President Joe Biden has surged with significant momentum ahead of the remaining candidates in the contest.

This poll was conducted Sunday, March 1 through Monday, March 2, after the Biden’s victory in the South Carolina Presidential Primary. The poll was still in the field when the announcement came that former South Bend (Indiana) Mayor Pete Buttigieg was suspending his campaign, but ended before Senator Amy Klobuchar’s (D-MN) announcement.

Likely Democratic Primary voters were asked: “If the Democratic Primary Election for President were held today, for whom would you most likely cast your vote or are you still undecided? If you have already voted, please select the candidate that received your vote.”

Joe Biden 44.75%
Bernie Sanders 17.68%
Michael Bloomberg 10.87%
Elizabeth Warren 7.37%
Amy Klobuchar 3.13%
Pete Buttigieg 2.58%
Another Candidate 3.13%
Undecided 10.50%

“While it’s important to note that more than 516,000 Democratic primary ballots had been cast before the poll was fielded, it provides a unique opportunity to see political momentum unfold in real time,” said Civitas Institute President Donald Bryson. “Biden was already performing competitively, but a strong debate performance combined with a definitive win in South Carolina has given him the key to a potential victory in North Carolina.”

Bryson continued, “It’s clear that Joe Biden has momentum in the South and Mid-Atlantic. It will be interesting to observe the 14 Super Tuesday States, and American Samoa, likely serving as regional blocs – particularly as Bloomberg and Warren seem to fade.”

This poll was conducted by IVR and Online Panel Interviews from March 1 to March 2 among a sample of 543 likely voters. Spry Strategies administered the poll. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points. Results are weighted. Some percentages in crosstab reports for this poll may not add to 100% due to rounding.
